Teachersโ€™ Association of Eastern University (TAEU) announces with serious concern that the composition and functioning of the Council of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka (EUSL) have become legally invalid due to irregularities that have remained unaddressed despite repeated notifications to the University and the University Grants Commission (UGC).

TAEU observed that one of the deans is allowed to continue in office, despite the cadre position not being approved by the Department of Management Service and subsequently by the Office of the Prime Minister. This unauthorized appointment is leading to an artificially inflated and therefore irregular number of external Council members. As a result, any decisions taken by the current Council are vulnerable to legal challenge.

TAEU further highlights the continued presence of a Council member who has been fraudulently using the titles of Professor and Doctor. Although this issue has been brought to the attention of the UGC Chairman on multiple occasions, no action has been taken so far, both by the UGC and the University. The inclusion of such an individual seriously undermines the integrity and credibility of the national higher education sector, particularly the Council of the Eastern University, which serves as the apex body in the Eastern University.

The TAEU notes with disappointment that both the UGC and the University administration have failed to take timely corrective measures on these matters, despite acknowledging the concerns and the potential consequences. The lack of action appears to reflect a pattern of administrative delay at a time when the present Government of Sri Lanka is actively working toward building a corruption-free nation.

TAEUโ€™s Demands

TAEU calls for the immediate suspension of all University Council meetings until:

  1. The Council is reconstituted strictly in accordance with the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978; and
  2. The Council member misusing academic titles is removed from the body.

As a means of pressuring both administrations, TAEU commenced the strike on 27th November 2025, and it will continue until these demands are fulfilled.

  2. Reinstating the 20% special academic allowance.
  3. Ensuring timely and adequate recruitment of lecturers.

Federation of University Teachers' Associations (FUTA) has declared a one-day token strike on Tuesday, 30th September 2025. As a sister union of FUTA, the TAEU has decided to adhere to FUTA's decision in solidarity in order to safeguard and achieve our rights. The principal objectives of this trade union action are to urge the government to take immediate and concrete measures to resolve the following critical issues:

  1. Rectifying the long-standing salary anomaly.
  2. Reinstating the 20% special academic allowance.
  3. Ensuring timely and adequate recruitment of lecturers.

One-Day Token Strike Against UGC's Inaction

TAEU has launched a one-day token strike on 29th September in protest against the continued inaction of the UGC regarding the appointment of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies of EUSL. It is noted that the cadre for the Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies, was granted by the DMS on 20th |une 2025. TAEU reminded the UGC to take action by the letter dated 16th July 2025. However, to date, no steps have been taken to fill the position.

As a result, the university is currently functioning without a Dean, causing several administrative irregularities. For example, the release of student results has been delayed, and the Board of Graduate Studies has not convened for the past two months. Moreover, the upcoming General Convocation scheduled for the 4th and 5th of October 2025 is now at risk of embarrassment, as there is no Dean in place to read the list of graduates at the ceremony. In light of the above, the Special General Body Meeting of the TAEU resolved to conduct a one-day token strike.
